The Gem of the College

شعبۂ جغرافیہ

Ask anyone in Rawalpindi which department is the heart of Asghar Mall College and you will hear one answer. Geography has been taught here since the college's first day in 1948; independent reference entries still call it the institution's most prominent department. The claim survives scrutiny. The evidence: a founder of national rank, twenty Punjab University gold medals, a faculty with doctorates in the environmental and geospatial sciences, two rooms that carry honoured names, and a field-survey tradition older than most of the students walking into it. Through the M.Sc. era this was one of only three centres of postgraduate Geography in the entire province; today it anchors the college's BS generation.

Dr. Kaniz Fatima Yusuf GIS & Remote Sensing Lab

First set up in 2006 and rebuilt in 2023–24 largely by the department's own alumni, the lab runs ArcGIS, QGIS, ERDAS Imagine and Google Earth Pro. Every BS student does GIS and Remote Sensing practicals here — satellite eyes inside heritage walls.

Dr. Muhammad Zafar Ahmed Khan Seminar Library

Named for a former Head of Department and Principal (1928–1983), it holds some 4,500 volumes, back-runs of every Geography journal published in Pakistan, the census record — and complete 1:50,000 topographic-sheet coverage of the country, a claim no other college seminar library in the region can make.

20

Twenty gold medals. One department.

Between 1969 and 2014, students of this department took first position in University of the Punjab M.Sc. Geography examinations twenty times — from Azra Mustafa's first medal to Wajeeha Arshad's. Set that against the resources of a public college, and it stops being a statistic and becomes a culture.

On the ground since 1983

Every year, without a break, the senior class goes out for a week of fieldwork and comes back with a hundred-mark report — landform surveys at Ayubia, bazaar mapping in Muzaffarabad, slope profiling around Rawalakot, tourism studies at Murree. Students learn what no classroom teaches: how to design a survey, how to read a 1:50,000 sheet in the rain, how to write to deadline.

The store still holds the classic kit — plane table, theodolite, prismatic compass, clinometer — beside the satellite era in the lab next door. The department's alumni association, AOSG, keeps the network alive long after convocation: it funded the new laboratory and mentors the students now sitting in it.

Why Study Geography Here

Geography at GGCAM combines a rare academic pedigree (Pakistan's first woman Vice Chancellor founded this department) with hands-on modern tooling: a working GIS & Remote Sensing lab, annual field surveys since 1983, and a placement record of 20 University of the Punjab gold medals between 1969 and 2014.
