The Department of Statistics at Govt. Postgraduate College, Asghar Mall, Rawalpindi, with special interest of its faculty and support of the public, was established in 1963 under the headship of Prof. Manzoor Ahmad. After that Prof. Ch. Yousaf Ali became the head of the department in 1971 and established the departmental library by his personal contributions and therefore. The Department Library is named Ch. Yousaf Ali. Prof. Abrar is a very significant name in the history of the Statistics department of this College, he was a man whose intellect was dipped with the richest tincture of knowledge and who taught thousands. Prof. Ghulam Hussain Kiyani played a pivotal role in the development of the Department of Statistics and the College in general. He served as Head of Department and Hostel warden during his stay in this College (1971-2003). Prof. Muhammad Irshad Ahmad (1987-2015) is another big name in the history of our college. He served as Head of the Department of Statistics and Controller of Examination of the college in an exemplary manner. Then there was the irresistible Prof. Malik Abdul Jalil, a man with a heart of gold and a nature so jolly that everyone got a second helping on his dining table. Prof. Dr. Zahid Iqbal, (Ph.D.) became the Head of Department in 2016 and tried his level best to start M.Sc Statistics at the College, prior to his joining at Allama Iqbal Open University as Associate Prof. keeping in view the need for the subject, but his efforts could not bear fruit. It is pertinent to mention here with honor, that faculty members who remained here in this Department are serving the prestigious institutions of the country including Prof. Dr. Yousaf Ahmad Shad, Chairman Department of Statistics, Quaid e Azam, University, Islamabad, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akbar, Chairman Department of Statistics, International Islamic University, Islamabad).Now the Department of Statistics at Govt. Postgraduate College, Asghar Mall, Rawalpindi is heading towards BS (Hons) with fully equipped labs and highly qualified faculty in the field to cater to the growing demand for well learned/skilled graduates in the field of Statistics.
